Sri Lanka, a nation with <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rich cultural heritage<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">biodiversity,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is no exception to this trend. However, despite strong governmental messaging and support from consumer networks and other interest groups, the adoption of sustainable practices in Sri Lanka has been slower than anticipated over the past few years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">promotion of sustainable consumption practices<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Sri Lanka faced <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">several challenges<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A significant obstacle has been the availability and cost of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ab\u00a0guilt-free\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> food produced <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in an environmentally friendly<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> manner. These products often come at a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">higher price<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which can deter consumers from making sustainable choices. Additionally, many consumers continue to engage in convenient but <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unsustainable purchasing<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consumption habits<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, despite increased awareness, the practical application of this knowledge remains weak. The <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">low ratio of practice<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to awareness indicates that while consumers are informed about sustainable practices, they are not consistently incorporating them into their daily lives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One critical issue that has been identified is the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nutritional quality<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of food produced and consumed. Modern agricultural practices often prioritize yield over <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nutritional value<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. For example, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heirloom varieties<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of fruits and vegetables, which are <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">richer in nutrients<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, are being replaced by <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hybrid varieties<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that produce larger quantities but are <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nutritionally inferior<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.
